Meaning of the name of "Shaanxi"
"Thieves' Mountain West". Check the derivation of "shaan" in www.zhongwen.com . Technically, the name of Shaanxi should be spelled exactly the same as that of the neighboring province of Shanxi ("Mountain West"), but the extra "a" is added to indicate a tonal difference that would otherwise require a special accent to be printed above the single "a".

Location of Shaanxi
In north-central China, about 750 km (500 miles) southwest of Beijing.

Population of Shaanxi
33,000,000 (1990 estimate). Almost all Shaanxi natives are of the Han Chinese ethnic group, with a few Hui (Chinese Muslims) present.

Description of Shaanxi
There are three main regions in Shaanxi. The southern mountains are wild and remote, with much of their natural forest cover still remaining. In the center is the Wei River valley, a fertile basin that supports most of the agriculture of the province. The northern plateau region is drier and colder, and is covered with loess soils that have been deeply eroded.

History of Shaanxi
Shaanxi is famous as the cradle of Chinese civilization, reaching its peak in the Tang dyanasty (618-907). Since then it has experienced more than its share of famines and rebellions.

Language of Shaanxi
Native inhabitants of Shaanxi speak dialects of Mandarin Chinese .

Culture of Shaanxi
