Shanxi,located on the eastern part of the loess plateau of North China, Borders Hebei Province, Henan Province ,Shaanxi Province and Inner Mogolia Autonomous Region. The name of the province, Shanxi, literally means "West of the Mountains", referring to the Taihang Mountains .During the Spring and Autumn Period(700-467BC),the province was the territory of the Jin State, so it is also known as the Jin Shanxi Province covers an area of 156.300 square kilometres with towering mountains occupy 80% of the land, the province lies at an average altitude of about 1000 metres above the sea level .The Yellow River flows through Shanxi from east and creates the world famous Hukou Waterfalls.
Shanxi's long history has provided the province with a rich and colorful cultural heritages, which owing to it's stability and prosperity has been well preserved. Thus earning the name of "Museum of Ancient Chinese Culture" The province's numerous scenic spots include Yungang Grottoes, Buddhist Temples of Wutai Mountain, Xuankong (Hanging) Monastery and Pingyao Ancient Town which gained the fame home and abroad.
