Day 1 Arrival / Lhasa Transfer via: by air - own arrangement Be met by our English speaking tour guide at Lhasa airport and drive to Lhasa along a 90 kms scenic road, with several photo stops along the Lhasa River.
Lhasa is an amazing city where the traditional culture of devout Buddhists and the modern world intersect, with crowded discos juxtaposed with praying pilgrims outside the Jokhang Temple. Since we have just made a sudden ascent from the lowlands to an altitude of over 3,700 meters (12,139 ft), the afternoon is left free to acclimatize.
Lhasa, a palace for the Dalai Lama at the very beginning and later served as the whole governmental administration. It is the heart and soul of Tibet and an object of devout pilgrimage, is still a city of wonders. "Lhasa" in Tibetan means "the land of gods" and is the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. The Jokhang Temple is the spiritual centre of Tibet - a destination for millions of Tibetan pilgrims. The Sera Monastery lies on the northern edge of Lhasa at the base of Tatipu Hill. 'Sera' means 'merciful hail' denoting its rivalry with the 'Rice Heap' (Drepong) since hail destroys rice. Sera was smaller than Drepong with about 7,000 monks but was very rich and comparable in power.
